Newsletters, Blogs & E-mails. What’s the Difference and Who Cares?

You have all heard of Newsletters, Blogs and E-mails but few of you stop to think about the differences between them how each might meet your needs. This blog post will provide insight into the world of online writing.

Newsletters

Dictionary Definition: A newsletter is bulletin issued periodically to the members of a society, business, or organization.

Real Life: A Newsletter is a lengthy publication that describes in detail everything your company has accomplished and plans to accomplish within a short period of time such as one month or one quarter. Newsletters can be e-mailed, or printed. Companies prefer Newsletters because they sound fancy and professional; since newsletters are the traditional way of sharing a company’s information, they give people a sense of comfort.

Who Needs a Newsletter: Companies, Institutions, Charities, etc. Any entity where people are financially invested should send Newsletters to update their supporters.

How Often To Send: Quarterly or Monthly.

The Problem: Newsletters are very long and wordy. They take a very long time to put together and very few people will read them.

Blogs

Definition: a Blog is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Real Life: A blog is a fun way to engage your audience in or inform them of one particular subject related to your business or passion. Blogs are distributed in e-mails, on your website or through social media. The overall goal is to capture your target market’s attention. People like them because they are interesting and an easy read.

Who Needs a Blog: Independent Business Owners and Professionals should write blogs to establish themselves as experts in their field.

How Often to Send: Daily, Weekly or Monthly

The Problem: There are so many blogs out there, and blogs are very wordy. This means it may be difficult to get a lot of people to see your blog and you need to be very creative.

E-mails

Definition: E-mails are messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network.

Real Life: E-mails are the best way to inform your audience about everything that is happening in your company or business. They have a higher ROI than any other marketing strategy out there. E-mails should be limited to 20 lines or less and can include links to your website, newsletters, blog, social media and more!

Who Needs E-mail Marketing: Everyone in business. If you are in business, you need to send e-mails.

How Often to Send: As often as you have relevant content that is different and interesting. Some industries send e-mails multiple times a week and others send one e-mail a month.

The Problem: Nothing. E-mail Marketing is the best!
